Lipofsky interpreted #4 of his most recent glass series, Australian Landscape 2004, reproducing its lines, shapes and subtle colors on the violin. He generously provided new cello strings to the three-quarter size violin, giving it an ambitious look.
Marvin Lipofsky earned a BFA in industrial design from the University of Illinois, and went on to study sculpture at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Here, he was one of the first students to study with the pioneer of the studio art glass movement, Harvey Littleton. He was one of the first artists to create completely non-utilitarian objects of glass and he regarded his creations as aesthetic objects, just like paintings. His work is known for its organic forms and interesting surface treatments.
He went on to introduce glass as an art form into the Design Department of the University of California at Berkeley, and to found and head the California College of Arts and Crafts. Lipofsky has travelled extensively to work with the best glass artists in the world, creating collaborative sculptural works as well as gathering inspiration for his own pieces.
As a teacher, Lipofsky has trained a generation of studio artists who currently staff studio glass programs and operate glass studios throughout the country. He was a founder of the Glass Art Society, and has been editor of its journal. He has had more than 40 solo exhibitions and has been included in hundreds of group shows. He twice received NEA Fellowships and has been selected as an American Crafts Council Fellow and as a Living Treasure of California by the Crocker Art Museum.
The recipient of numerous international awards, his work can be found in many collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, New York, the Corning Museum, Corning, New York, the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto, Japan, and the Stedelijke Museum in Amsterdam.
Marvin lives and works in Berkeley, California.
