“I was thrilled to have the opportunity to create a painting using the form of the violin. Music is one of the greatest joys in life! Like in the visual arts, there is so much variety that it speaks to each of us in a different way. I strongly believe in the expressive power of non-verbal forms of communication like the visual arts, music, and dance. These arts transport us to a place in our mind unreachable by words. Music lifts us through a range of emotions and experiences nourishing and sustaining us through joy as well as sorrow.
When I teach, the parallels between music and visual art is so apparent! Composition, rhythm, contrast, color, harmony! These terms and concepts are shared . Droplets of rain or tears cover the front surface of the violin I created for WYSO, symbolizing the range of emotions evoked by musical compositions and continuing the theme I develop in my current work.
Water is a constant in the ebb and flow of life, and is an important symbol in my current work suggesting patterns of rain, flowing water, and human emotion. Raised textures on scroll-like paintings cast rhythmic shadow patterns, allowing the layered color more interaction and offering a glimpse into previous strata, like a physical history of the painting. Water as metaphor for transformation in nature and human experience is a key theme in my work.”
Katherine Steichen Rosing is a Madison artist who has had solo and group exhibitions across the United States, Germany, Japan and China. Katherine has taught studio art courses in the Chicago area and in Madison. She is fascinated by the painted surface and the juxtaposition of color and texture.
