“I use textures and color to reflect the visual qualities of the natural world. The effects of time, light, color, and weather on ordinary natural forms continually fascinate me. My work attempts to capture memories and impressions of these effects in the landscape that I see as I pursue various activities. Photographs, sketches, and memories contribute to my work. I combine sources in my studio to create these images. I may use a sky from one photograph with a sketch done on site, or I may add, delete, or substitute one tree for another because it is better compositionally, or even change the season and time of day. These images are not necessarily site-specific portraits, but rather evocations of the beauty that exists around us where natural elements are not covered in concrete and asphalt. We all need to allow nature to nourish us. I hope these artworks help fulfill that need. Lately, I have been involved in portraying prairie plant forms, I used them for the violin theme with a slight nod to the formal symmetry of the violin's elegant form.” Karin Ketarkus
